Chapter 1: Communication
This chapter is about different models for the process of communication. It delves into the pros and cons of each model. The first model is is the Shannon/Weaver model. this model was originally a concept for machines, but was adapted by Weaver to describe communication between people, because of this it has it's faults. It is extremely simplified and does not account for a lot. The second model is the Emmert/Donaghy model. This model shows a deeper understanding of communication as it accounts for things such as context, feedback, and the consequences of having two communicators. The third model is Berlo's Message Components. It does a good job of describing all the components of communication. It discusses things like the Code and the Message cycle. While all of these models are good, they are not perfect because they are speculative and not grounded in empirical data.
